Enter the Carlsbad Flower Fields, a San Diego staple just a short jaunt up Interstate 5 from La Jolla. There, a sea of vibrant color beckons you in the form of 80 million (you read that right) ranunculus.
These cheery blooms, striped into swaths by color, form the world’s largest ranunculus flower field and a breathtaking attraction, making it a beautiful day trip during your San Diego and La Jolla visit.

2026 Opening dates and ticket logistics
The Carlsbad Flower Fields opened March 1 and will remain open until May 10. The fields are open daily from 9 am to 6 pm, giving you plenty of time to peruse the petals.
Tickets are not sold onsite; you must buy your tickets online prior to arrival. Tickets can be purchased here and cost $27 for adults and $17 for children, with season passes and military/senior discounts available.
General admission tickets include the flower fields, themed gardens and exhibits and the sweet pea maze. Other attractions (more on those later) are available for an extra fee, along with food and drink choices.
Be aware the busiest days are Saturday and Sunday and the peak bloom is late March through April; your best bet is to visit on a weekday in early April.
Getting there: The journey from La Jolla to Carlsbad
You’ll find the Carlsbad Flower Fields at 5704 Paseo del Norte, Carlsbad. From La Jolla, navigate to I-5 north and exit Palomar Airport Road. Follow the signs – and your eyes – to the brightly-colored fields.
Parking is free, though there is a package upgrade that includes reserved parking in the Bloomside lot.
Once parked, walk to the entrance, show your tickets via your phone screen, and prepare for wonder!
Photography playbook: Capturing the giant ranunculus

The Carlsbad Flower Fields are a photographer’s dream, no matter the skill level. It’s easy to capture the flowers’ beauty and make any snapshot look great.
As you walk the fields, keep your eyes out for cut outs, allowing you to place yourself amid the blooms. Hand your phone to someone a few feet in front of you, allowing them to step back and frame you among the colors.
Personal cameras, phones and tripods are permitted for casual use. However, all professional portrait photography sessions must be booked at least 10 days in advance exclusively through The Flower Fields.
Outside professional photographers and drones are not permitted.
The local insider secret: Wear white or light pastel colors for your photos. The vivid ranunculus colors reflect onto your skin; light clothes act as a natural “reflector” for better portraits.
