Bird Rock is bounded by La Cañada Street to the north and a jagged connection between Wrelton Drive and Van Nuys Street via an alley west of La Jolla Mesa to the south, bordering Pacific Beach.
A three-block section of La Jolla Boulevard from Camino de la Costa south to Midway Street makes up the Bird Rock commercial district, containing uniquely-curated shops and restaurants to keep you entertained all day.

Bird Rock’s history and development
Originally called “Bird Rock City by the Sea,” the community in La Jolla was founded in 1906 when the area was subdivided by developer Michael Francis Hall, according to the Bird Rock Community Council.
Hall so named the neighborhood for an offshore rock described as having the shape of a bird, according to the city of San Diego.
Birds, including California brown pelicans, have used and continue to use the rock formation as a perching place.
The rock formation is slowly eroding, its visual prominence fading. A rain storm on December 21, 2010, caused the rock’s archway to crumble away completely.
In the early 1900s, Bird Rock was the home to many Japanese farmers, according to the La Jolla Historical Society, and the land was dominated by strawberry, sea lavender and vegetable fields.
The Bird Rock community came to be considered “the country” by central La Jolla residents.
During World War II, Bird Rock housed a unit of the Coast Artillery called the Bird Rock Coastal Defense and Anti-Aircraft Training Center.
After the war, Bird Rock expanded with the construction of modest homes on ample lots inhabited by working families.
Now, Bird Rock is still a haven for families and neighborhood events, along with a strong culture of surfing, design and community.
A day in Bird Rock: where to eat and what to do
A Bird Rock La Jolla itinerary starts with breakfast at Wayfarer Bread, a charming craft bakery at 5525 La Jolla Blvd whose reputation means longer lines if you don’t get there early. Bustling with locals, Wayfarer offers a delicious array of naturally-fermented breads and French-inspired pastries, seasonal sandwiches and more.
Head next to Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, original to La Jolla and located at 5627 La Jolla Blvd, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has firmly established itself as a premier destination for coffee connoisseurs. You’re in for a treat whether you opt for one of their seasonal varietals or traditional and creative drinks, all ethically sourced and crafted with expertise.
Walk with your drink up to La Jolla Hermosa Park at 5780 Chelsea Ave, where your coffee will pair beautifully with the ocean views. Take in the changing tides and breathe in that tangy sea air that drew you here.
Once you’ve had your fill, wander a bit north into the Hermosa neighborhood on Camino de la Costa, La Jolla’s “Street of Dreams” and marvel at the fascinating architecture both new and historic.
When your hunger for real estate design has been satisfied, amble back to La Jolla Boulevard and work your way south, where shopping in Bird Rock is both friendly and distinctive.
Check out women’s clothing at the Bobbi Rocco store, browse for surf gear and souvenir merchandise at Hermosa Surf Shop, peruse curated decor at Roam Homeware or find your next crystal and tarot card set at Lavande Spiritual Wellness Boutique. Other treasures are sprinkled throughout, so take your time, interact with the locals and discover a plethora of treasures.
For lunch in Bird Rock, direct yourself to Beach Break, a grab & go market selling ready-to-eat meals, snacks and juices focused on high-quality convenience, featuring meals like curry chicken salad, roasted beet pasta salad, stuffed poblano peppers, and orange and fennel salad, charcuterie snack box and more.
Pick up your meal there and wander to Calumet Park at 5435 Calumet Ave, overlooking the popular surfing site Rock Pile. Picnic among the other sun-chasers, watch the wave-riders and savor the Bird Rock lifestyle.
For more outdoor mindfulness, take in a class at Riffs Yoga Studios, 5510 La Jolla Blvd. A unique wellness center with a studio on a beautiful wooden deck under a canopy of trees, Riffs offers outdoor yoga, sauna, cold plunge, and red light therapy as well as a variety of services.
It’s now Happy Hour in Bird Rock, and you’ll find the happiest at LJ Crafted Wines, run by a Bird Rock family and serving great wine with sustainability in a cozy atmosphere. Order a tasting with charcuterie and chat away the rest of the afternoon with small-batch wines poured directly from the barrel.
The star of the show is the sunset, and we’d be remiss to miss it. Catch a spot on one of the benches at the western ends of Midway Street or Bird Rock Avenue and wonder at the brilliance of a Bird Rock sunset as it sends the day out in colorful, spectacular style.
Finish your Bird Rock day at Beaumont’s, locally-run and bursting with local flavor. With frequent live music events, a vibrant ambiance and diverse menu, Beaumont’s is a local gathering spot offering delicious food, handcrafted seasonal cocktails, and top-tier entertainment.
Getting to Bird Rock
Finding your way to Bird Rock is as simple as navigating to La Jolla Boulevard and Turquoise Street and heading north or La Jolla Boulevard and Camino de la Costa to go south. Parking is available for two hours along the boulevard, with side streets offering unlimited parking.
Using public transportation is easy, too, as the San Diego MTS line 30, Old Town to UTC via Pacific Beach, runs north and south along La Jolla Boulevard.
Once in Bird Rock, you’ll find the walkability extremely easy, though at locally-owned Pedego La Jolla, you’ll find bike rentals to make your day “wheely” special.
Bird Rock events
As a tight-knit community, Bird Rock prides itself on several events that bring neighbors and visitors together. Each event draws thousands, so plan ahead and enjoy the company!
On Independence Day, Bird Rock neighbors pull together dozens of floats and other organized entries for the Beaumont Avenue Fourth of July Parade, a tradition for decades that culminates in an after-party with live music, food and other entertainment.
In October, thousands of community members and more attend the annual BirdStock Music Festival, which entails live music, food and much more.
On Halloween, Bird Rock neighborhoods, especially on Waverly Avenue and surrounding blocks, go all out, with decorations to feast your eyes on and thousands arriving for trick-or-treat.
