Walter Munk Day returns to Kellogg Park in San Diego for a free, all-ages celebration honoring the extraordinary legacy of Walter Munk — the visionary oceanographer widely recognized as one of the most influential ocean scientists of the 20th century. Hosted by the Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans, this annual gathering brings together scientists, educators, artists, students, and ocean enthusiasts united by a shared curiosity about the sea.
This year’s event spotlights the history of scuba diving and marine archaeology, with more than 70 ocean-related exhibits, keynote and special guest speakers, robotics and technology demonstrations, STEAM activities for all ages and a Kumeyaay Smudge Ceremony and Bird Singers. The day also marks several milestone anniversaries — including the 75th anniversary of the Scripps Scientific Diving Program, the 10th anniversary of the Scripps Center for Marine Archaeology and the 50th anniversary of the film JAWS.
Attendees can explore a virtual reality deep-sea experience, take part in a scavenger hunt, watch shark rides and pick up an Explorer Passport Booklet to guide their day.
