After years of construction, a brand new fire station has been added to the city of San Diego’s roster.

Fire Station 52, called the Torrey Pines Fire Station, has been operational for over a week on North Torrey Pines Road just southwest of the Genesee Avenue intersection and serves UC San Diego, the Torrey Pines Mesa and University City.

The state-of-the-art fire station, designed by The Miller Hull Partnership and built by Level 10 Construction, is a two-story, 14,600-square foot building featuring three apparatus bays, an office, a workout room and an equipment locker room on the first floor.

The second floor has nine sleeping quarters, including a battalion chief’s room, kitchen and ready room.

Station 52 exemplifies “the city’s commitment to public safety, support for our first responders, sustainability and our continued partnership with UC San Diego,” San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Joe LaCava said at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 17.

Citing the expansion of businesses and UCSD campus growth, LaCava said “Station 52 gives us the preparedness and proximity that is essential during an emergency.”

The station also exemplifies the city’s partnership with UCSD, which provided the land, LaCava said, thanking UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla and others.

“This is an amazing fire station,” Khosla said. “We need this to improve the response time for our community members [and] for UC San Diego itself.”

The “life sciences and innovation sector … that is concentrated in this community is growing,” San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said. “This growth is creating good, paying local jobs, … so we want to encourage that investment in this community.”

The Torrey Pines fire station is also now home to the region’s only electric fire engine, called a Volterra and made by Pierce Manufacturing.

The brand new station’s amenities will help first responders meet their number one goal, San Diego Fire Chief Robert Logan said: “To serve the community and meet the needs of the people that we serve.”
